Interviews with Residents: Life in Rode

Interviews with Residents: Life in Rode

11th May 2021

Now that many residents have settled into life in the community of new 2,3,4, and 5 bedroom homes at Church Farm, we got chatting with some of the new homeowners to find out what first attracted them to the area and what life is like living in this charming Somerset village.

The homes' traditional exterior feel yet contemporary build quality was a big plus for some residents. "We had never considered living in a new build and always saw ourselves settling in an old cottage in need of renovation. We came to look at the houses at Church Farm and realised they drew parallels with what we were hoping to achieve with a renovation. The houses here are full of character, made from local materials and offer fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. Having underfloor heating and low running costs is a huge bonus that we would never have had with an older property".

Across the board, those we spoke with were quick to highlight the benefits of Rode's location as well as its community feel. One resident said, "After visiting Rode a few times, I was attracted enough to buy a house here, mainly because I heard a lot from different sources about the sense of community in this little village. Beautiful countryside surrounds the village whilst a city vibe in Bath or Bristol is only a short drive away.". The benefits that Rode's location affords was a common theme, residents praised the "easy connections to Bath, Bristol and London through a variety of train stations" saying "Bath is very close and London is an easy drive too". One resident summed up the benefits of the location nicely commenting, "Rode is on the doorstep of beautiful countryside with river walks but close enough to the bustle of local towns".

Excellent local amenity provision is high on the list for ease of life in a semi-rural location such as Rode. The "community feel with a handy post office and shop, churches and pubs and a good proximity to a plethora of schools" were mentioned alongside many great local producers: "having Somerset Foodie on our doorstep has been a bonus, as well as Fussell's Foods.", whilst The Village Bakery Co. AKA "Joe, our fantastic local baker" received rave reviews all around.

The pubs and eateries around Rode are undoubtedly popular, one respondent told us: "The food at the Cross Keys, and the Mill at Rode have been fantastic during lockdown. The friendliness in both has been lovely, and we have been made to feel most welcome." whilst another said, "I love the community in Rode, it has a great feel, and everyone that lives here is very helpful. It's surrounded by beautiful rural areas, which are great for walks. There are lovely farm shops, pubs and cafes nearby as well."

The proximity to the open country, beautiful views and easy access to scenic walks are a significant draw to village life, and this has never been more important than over the past year. Residents spoke with passion about "beautiful dog walks - including the riverside walks", "infinite green views whichever way I turn", and "the cosy pubs and miles of natural landscape" that lie just beyond their doorsteps.

Above all, the residents we spoke with praised the pace of life that this beautiful village affords "Monday to Friday we are so busy with work and rarely stop. Rode allows us to switch off from everyday life. We walk our dog for miles, eat in local restaurants, pick up supplies for the village shop and can easily visit Babington to meet with friends."

We are delighted to see that the new homes we have created at Church Farm are bringing joy and happiness to their new owners. We think the unique community feel of this charming village is eloquently summed up: "Having lived in the area around Rode for a long time, and having some friends who live in Rode, I always heard about the lovely village atmosphere that Rode had, the mix of people, the beautiful buildings and village green, two excellent pubs - the Cross Keys and the Mill at Rode - the brilliant village shop and post office, with a cafe (Covid permitting) and great dog walking. Those, who I know, speak so highly of the friendliness and kindness of the people who live here, and that was the kind of community that we were keen to live in and share."
